Russia attacked a truck near Ukraine’s border with Poland on Sunday, Polish and Ukrainian officials said, in the latest strike near Nato territory as Moscow and Kyiv intensify long-range attacks.
The attack took place about 800 metres from Poland, briefly disrupting operations at the Dorohusk-Yahodyn border crossing, Polish border guards told Reuters. Russia has controlled the plant since March 2022.
Russia’s defence ministry said it had targeted infrastructure used to facilitate military cargo shipments from Europe into western Ukraine. In Russia, the mayor of Nizhnekamsk in the Volga region of Tatarstan said Ukrainian drones had struck “civilian and industrial” targets in the city, killing at least two people and injuring several others. Ukrainian authorities did not immediately comment on the Nizhnekamsk strike but said they had struck another refinery in Russia’s southern Krasnodar region.
The crossing later resumed operations. Ukraine relies on its borders with Poland, Romania and Moldova for trade and arms supplies. Russia has targeted Ukrainian border crossings with Western allies in recent weeks as both sides increasingly focus on disrupting each other’s economic and military infrastructure more than four years into the war. In the Russian-controlled part of southeastern Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia region, the head of Russia’s state nuclear energy company Rosatom accused Ukraine of striking fuel trucks near the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, Europe’s largest. It remains close to the front line. A Ukrainian military spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Mayor Radmir Belyaev did not specify which targets were hit.
