Patrick Mahomes has spent much of 2026 preparing for a return that once seemed far away.
“If you put something out in front of me,” Mahomes said, “I want to go out and get it. “I mean,” Veach said, “he gave up an entire summer. After suffering a serious knee injury last December, the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback turned rehabilitation into a daily mission. His road back was filled with early mornings, demanding workouts and very little time away from the team facility. Yet one surprisingly personal goal gave Mahomes extra motivation during the toughest months. The FIFA World Cup offered a welcome distraction. Mahomes followed Spain closely and became particularly interested in young star Lamine Yamal. Watching matches gave him something to focus on while spending long hours inside the rehabilitation room.
“I’m a competitor,” he said. “I’m not going to lose who I am.” Golden is now walking and running, while Mahomes is preparing to return to the Chiefs lineup. He has already begun taking part in football activities, including working with the scout team during the preseason.
Mahomes’ Determination Shines Through Recovery
Patrick Mahomes has demonstrated a strong competitive spirit during his recovery from injury. Despite being sidelined for nine months, he has consistently arrived at the Chiefs facility early each day, starting his training routine at 5:30 a.m. and on the training table by 6 a.m.
His teammate, Nick Bolton, noted that while Mahomes’ leadership was easier to showcase during periods of success, his work ethic remains evident even in challenging times. “For six years, it was convenient for him (to lead) because of the success, and you could see his work ethic,” Bolton said. “But now it’s not convenient for him, and this is still who he is.”
