The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has announced the closure of the old Jajmau Ganga bridge in Kanpur for a period of three months, starting Sunday. This closure is necessary for essential repairs and the replacement of span bearings. During this time, heavy vehicles, including UPSRTC buses, will be barred from using the bridge. The detours and restrictions will remain in effect until December 13.
Routes of more than 600 Roadways buses travelling towards Kanpur from Lucknow, Unnao and Raebareli will be changed. Vehicles heading towards Banda and Mahoba will use NH-31 through Lalganj and Fatehpur. Those travelling towards Hamirpur, Jhansi and Orai will reach Baksar turn via Bihar on NH-31, take NH-19 through Chaudgara and SH-46 to Ghatampur, and proceed on NH-34. Heavy vehicles travelling from Unnao to Kanpur must use NH-31 through Bihar to reach Baksar turn on NH-19 before proceeding towards Kanpur. The diversion will add 60 km to the Kanpur bus journey, with buses covering 80 km via the Bihar-Baksar route through Chaudgara. The journey will take about 1.5 hours longer.
Because of heavy highway traffic, implementation was taking additional time. Diversions have been introduced at Gagankheda, Azad Marg and Tribhuvan Kheda intersections in Unnao. NHAI Director Pankaj Yadav said barricading had begun at the three intersections in coordination with the Unnao administration. Large vehicles will be completely barred for three days, while small vehicles will be allowed. Heavy vehicles travelling from Unnao towards Auraiya and Etawah will use the Ganga Expressway and Agra-Lucknow Expressway. Alternatively, they may travel via Baksar turn. Download the TOI App.
