US schools on alert over creepy ‘Cat in the Hat’ threat trend.
The post led to the arrest of a 14-year-old student.
The Hutchinson police department said the student had created a TikTok account for the local community that referred to the Cat in the Hat trend. School officials said both students would face disciplinary action in addition to the criminal charges. The Grand Junction police department in Colorado said it increased patrols at West Middle School and Grand Junction High School “out of an abundance of caution” after a Cat in the Hat post circulated.
The teenager was later charged with two counts of criminal threat. “Threats of any nature are taken seriously by the Hutchinson Police Department and Hutchinson High School. In Georgia, two students at Worth County High School are also facing charges over their alleged involvement in the trend. Police and school officials are urging students not to share or repost the material. They have asked anyone who sees a possible threat to report it to a trusted adult, school administrator or law enforcement official.
