Murshidabad : Tension gripped Rejinagar after police arrested two Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP) netas, including a former aide of party chairman and Nowda MLA Humayun Kabir , from Berhampore and Beldanga in Murshidabad.
Police arrested Sarafraj Nawaj Chowdhury (47) on Monday after tracking an audio recording of a phone conversation that allegedly discussed a plan to create communal tension over the Babri Masjid issue. He alleged that Sekh was arrested in a false extortion case and claimed party workers were being threatened ahead of the Oct 6 bypoll. The audio clip will be sent for voice-sampling tests. Investigators are yet to establish when the conversation took place. Kabir, who recently staged dharnas outside Shaktipur and Rejinagar PS, alleging police atrocities on AJUP workers, denied Chowdhury was currently close to him.
Chowdhury, a Nowda resident who also has a house in Berhampore, will be produced in court on Tuesday, with police seeking seven days’ custody. In a separate operation, police arrested AJUP’s Beldanga-I president Munayem Sekh from Kapasdanga village on Sunday night.
Murshidabad SP Sachin Makkar said preliminary investigation suggested Chowdhury had proposed planting eight to 10 BJP flags after asking another person to switch off CCTV cameras, allegedly to provoke Muslims against BJP.
