Lucknow: A leopard repeatedly sighted near human settlements: The wider industry impact

Lucknow: A leopard repeatedly sighted near human settlements and preying on livestock in Kakarha range of Katarniaghat Wildlife Division was captured early Monday, forest officials said.

A cage was installed on Sept 9 and the leopard finally entered into the trap around 2:45 am on Sept 14. The male leopard is aged around 6-7 years and weighs approximately 45-50 kg, according to the forest department’s preliminary assessment. DFO, Katarniaghat, Apoorv Dixit, said the leopard would be released into a dense forest area in its natural habitat after obtaining the necessary permissions from senior authorities and the govt, in accordance with prescribed guidelines. Forest personnel said they regularly found its pugmarks during morning patrols, causing concern among residents. The leopard had been frequently moving through Ramsahay Purwa hamlet and adjoining areas. Villagers had also submitted written and oral requests to the forest department seeking its capture. The animal was subsequently shifted to a safe location for examination. Veterinarian Deepak conducted a detailed health examination and found the leopard to be in good health and fit for release into the wild. Officials advised villagers to avoid venturing out alone, particularly during early morning and evening hours, and to travel in groups while carrying sticks. Residents have also been urged to avoid open defecation and use toilets inside their homes. The department has also advised residents to keep children under supervision and prevent them from venturing outside alone. Download the TOI App.
