Madurai: Madurai corporation and public works department’s (PWD) efforts to desilt main channels in the city have become an exercise in futility as residents continue to dump waste into the cleaned channels.
Balasubramaniam, secretary of the LIG Colony Resident’s Welfare Association, said the dumping of waste has increased the risk of flooding in the areas near the channel during the monsoon. The desilting works are rendered ineffective as dumped waste results in water stagnating in the channels to Vaigai river and other water bodies such as Vandiyur tank.
