Kolkata: Kolkata Police plans to replace heavy iron barricades with 50 mobile retractable sliding barriers before the festival season. The traffic wing has invited e-tenders for the barriers, estimated to cost Rs 38,80,500. Technical bids will open on September 22. Each unit will weigh about 40 kg, expand up to 4 metres, and stand 1.2 metres high.

Police officials said the barriers will help prevent jaywalking, reduce crowd pressure near narrow pandal approaches, create safer buffer zones, and improve crowd and traffic management across the city. The new barriers will be used in crowded areas such as Rashbehari Avenue, Gariahat, and major Metro station gates. They are meant to help police manage crowds, control pedestrian movement, block restricted areas, and adjust checkpoints quickly during Durga Puja and other high-footfall events. Unlike traditional iron barricades, the new aluminum barriers will be lighter, mobile, and easier to deploy. They will have wheels, locking systems, interlocking features, and a powder-coated finish.
