Friend missing
Chennai: A 26-year-old college lecturer drowned, and her colleague went missing on Monday evening after they were swept away by waves while bathing in the sea off Thazhankuppam near Ennore. Her colleague Naveen , 27, head of the hotel management department at the same college, remained missing as search operations continued.
Police said Naveen, a native of Pallapatti in Karur district, and Karthi, a culinary lecturer from Arani in Vellore district, had visited Kalaiyarasi’s house at Thazhankuppam as the college was closed. The deceased was identified as Kalaiyarasi, a nursing lecturer at a private Hotel management college in Mint. After lunch, Kalaiyarasi, Naveen, Karthi and Kalaiyarasi’s younger sister Kausalya went to the nearby Thazhankuppam beach. The four entered the sea for a swim when a huge wave suddenly swept them away. Karthi and Kausalya managed to cling to a rock and escape, while Kalaiyarasi and Naveen were dragged further into the sea.
Ennore fire and rescue services personnel subsequently launched a search operation, but it had to be suspended after dark. Hearing their cries, local fishermen rushed to their rescue and pulled Kalaiyarasi ashore. She was taken to hospital but died on the way. Fishermen searched for Naveen but could not trace him. The search resumed the following day. Ennore police registered a case and sent Kalaiyarasi’s body to Govt Stanley Hospital for postmortem examination. Download the TOI App.
