Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: A 62-year-old education institute owner, Sanjeev Chandrabhanu Sonawane, allegedly died by suicide at his residence in Padmanagar, Latur, on Tuesday.
Police said he used his licensed firearm. Latur superintendent of police Amol Tambe told TOI that Sonawane had been living alone for the past two months after his wife travelled to US to stay with their son. “He had recently suffered fractures after a fall in a bathroom while in Pune and had returned to Latur following initial treatment,” he said. They said the note stated that no one should be held responsible for his death and requested police not to investigate the matter. Police said the exact circumstances and motive behind the death would be determined only after the investigation was completed.
During the preliminary inquiry, police found that Sonawane’s sister and employees from his educational institutions had been looking after him. They would reportedly visit him daily and lock the house from outside after dinner each evening. Sonawane ran educational institutions in Latur, Solapur and Yedshi. His sister reportedly discovered the body when she arrived at his residence. Police reached the spot, conducted a panchnama and began an investigation. Investigators also recovered a handwritten note allegedly left by Sonawane. Police are verifying the note’s authenticity and contents. The incident comes at a time when Latur’s education sector has also been under scrutiny over allegations of examination paper leaks.
