The robbery unfolded on Oct 2, 2016, while Kardashian was in Paris for Fashion Week. They left with jewellery worth more than $6 million, including a diamond ring Kardashian had worn to a Givenchy show earlier that evening.
Kardashian has since described the attack as “the most terrifying experience of my life”. Two members of the gang, dressed as police officers, forced their way into her suite and immobilized her with tape and zip ties.
Eight convicted in Paris robbery case
In a case involving jewellery worth more than $6 million, Kim Kardashian’s damages award was €1 — the amount she herself had asked for. A former employee of the Paris hotel where the robbery took place received €109,516, while the hotel was awarded €50,000 by a Paris court on Tuesday. Kardashian sought a token euro, while AP reported that the former hotel employee’s claim totalled €550,000, including damages and interest. The reporting available so far does not explain how the court arrived at the €109,516 figure. Kardashian’s stylist Simone Harouche, who was also at the hotel during the robbery, followed the same route as Kardashian and asked for €1, receiving the amount she sought. Tuesday’s ruling dealt with compensation arising from the robbery, with Kardashian and Harouche making clear through their €1 claims that they were seeking acknowledgement rather than a substantial payout. Taylor Swift sought $1 in her 2017 assault and battery countersuit against former radio DJ David Mueller, whom she accused of groping her during a 2013 photo opportunity. Gwyneth Paltrow also countersued for a symbolic $1, plus legal fees, after retired optometrist Terry Sanderson sued her over a 2016 skiing collision in Utah. A jury in 2023 found Sanderson responsible for the collision and awarded Paltrow the dollar she had sought. In Britain, Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, received £1 in nominal damages — a token award — for misuse of private information after winning her case against the publisher of the Mail on Sunday over publication of parts of a private letter to her father.
Because time spent in pretrial detention was credited against their sentences, the convictions did not send those found guilty back to prison. Kardashian’s €1 claim was therefore, less about financial compensation than about having the harm formally recognised.
Earlier AP reporting, which described him as the concierge, said the attackers held him at gunpoint and forced him to take them to Kardashian’s suite. He later said the episode had traumatized him. The group became known in France as “les papys braqueurs”, or the “grandpa robbers”. Kardashian said after the convictions that she was “deeply grateful to the French authorities for pursuing justice in this case”.
The claims behind those figures were very different. “The experience was deeply traumatic, and its impact has stayed with us. “We are thankful to the Court and everyone who supported us throughout this process, and we hope to now move forward and continue to heal. The former hotel employee was himself caught in the armed robbery rather than being a bystander to what happened to Kardashian. Mohand Ouidja, who represented the former hotel employee, described Tuesday’s decision as a victory. The prosecution case involved charges including armed robbery, kidnapping, gang association and other offences. Six of the defendants were in their 60s and 70s when the case reached trial. The verdicts were not challenged on appeal. Kardashian’s decision to seek a token award has parallels in other high-profile cases, although the legal circumstances differed. A federal jury found in Swift’s favour and awarded her the dollar she had requested. The publisher separately agreed to an undisclosed payment for copyright infringement.
