Mumbai: The El Nino phenomenon has left its mark on Maharashtra , with the state reporting a 17.5% rain deficit till Sept 14 compared to its average rainfall. The worst hit is Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar division (Marathwada), which has reported a 31.4% rain deficit. However, the shortfall is widespread, with 19 of the state’s 36 districts facing a deficit of 20% or more.
“We are waiting to see the impact of the retreating rainfall over the next 10 days. Till Sept 14, the state had received 749.2 mm of rain compared to its average of 908.4 mm. Konkan region has had the highest rainfall in the state, with a deficit of just 5.2%. In many districts, there has been a 30-day gap in the rainfall. However, he pointed out that surveys to assess scarcity or drought officially begin after Oct 5. Fifteen districts in the state have reported rainfall that is 50% to 75% of the average rain till Sept 14. Only three districts have reported rainfall of over 100%.
North Maharashtra, Western Maharashtra and Vidarbha have also reported below-average rainfall.
