Central Railway is expanding emergency medical facilities across its Mumbai suburban network. Tenders have been issued to establish medical rooms at 43 stations. This initiative aims to provide immediate medical attention to passengers injured in railway-related incidents, such as falls from local trains, during the critical ‘golden hour’ following an injury.
The golden hour refers to the first hour after a traumatic injury, which is crucial for effective treatment and recovery. By improving access to medical care at these stations, Central Railway seeks to enhance passenger safety and health outcomes in emergency situations.
Medical Facilities Expansion at Railway Stations
Plans are underway to enhance medical support at Chembur, Mankhurd, and Khopoli railway stations. Authorities are currently addressing drug license issues in Chembur and Mankhurd, while construction oversight is being managed by railway officials in Khopoli following the monsoon season. Once these tasks are finalized, medical rooms are expected to be operational at all three locations.
This initiative responds to longstanding concerns regarding the availability of immediate medical care at suburban railway stations. In 2009, the Bombay High Court mandated that the railway administration implement measures to alleviate congestion at stations and provide emergency medical facilities. This is crucial for ensuring that injured passengers can receive timely treatment during the critical golden hour after an accident.
