Lucknow: To strengthen the operational capabilities of women in armed policing, the UP govt has sanctioned ₹1.94 crore for the procurement of 463 modern firearms for its three exclusive women Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) battalions stationed in Lucknow, Gorakhpur and Badaun.
The state has approved the purchase of 373 (9mm pistols) and 90 automatic assault rifles (7.62x39mm) at a cost of ₹1.94 crore. The sanctioned package includes 373 pistols costing ₹1.15 crore and 90 assault rifles worth ₹78.57 lakh. The expenditure must remain within the sanctioned amount and the funds are to be fully utilised by Mar 31, 2027.

Officials said the weapons will enable women personnel to undertake a wider range of operational responsibilities, including protection of sensitive installations, security arrangements at major events, crowd-control support and rapid deployment during law-and-order situations. “Dedicated weapons will allow women battalions to develop specialised capabilities and maintain regular proficiency training with assigned firearms,” senior officials said. The three all-women PAC battalions, named after celebrated women icons Veerangana Uda Devi, Jhalkari Bai and Veerangana Avantibai Lodhi, were established to create a dedicated armed policing structure for women within the PAC. Govt has directed police and logistics authorities to complete the purchase strictly in accordance with procurement rules and financial regulations. Download the TOI App.
