Speaking at an event on the occasion of Annapurna Divas at Boimela Prangan in Bidhannagar, Adhikari said 50 lakh new houses under PM Awas Yojana would be registered in the name of women. The CM said a beneficiary list had been prepared for construction of around 50 lakh houses in Bengal under PM Awas. Announcing that the fourth instalment of Annapurna Yojana was being credited into beneficiaries’ accounts, Adhikari said 1.7 crore women have already received the payment. The process will continue until all remaining eligible beneficiaries receive Rs 3,000. We rolled out the scheme soon after coming to office and every year Annapurna Divas will be observed on Sept 17 in the state to commemorate the birthday of our PM,” he said. Claiming that around 60,000 cases of child marriage and teenage deliveries had been reported in Bengal over the past six months, including around 13,000 in Murshidabad and 7,000 in South 24 Parganas, he warned that those facilitating marriage of girls below 18, including qazis and priests solemnising such marriages, would face legal action. Adhikari added that monthly remuneration of ICDS and Asha workers has been raised by Rs 5,000 per month from Aug while that of Prani Mitras has been hiked by Rs 2,000 along with their inclusion in the Annapurna scheme. “Govt transferred Rs 1,000 each to 20.13 lakh girl students on Kanya Ratna Divas on Aug 14. This amount will be doubled from Jan 2027. Girls pursuing undergraduate courses after higher secondary education will receive Rs 50,000 over three years — Rs 17,000, Rs 17,000 and Rs 16,000 respectively,” he said. Sudipta Barik of Namkhana, South 24 Parganas, said the assistance was helping her buy medicines for her aged parents-in-law.
He also announced a series of measures aimed at women’s empowerment and education, and curbing child marriage and substance abuse. Women’s safety figured prominently in the CM’s address as he announced the constitution of a commission headed by retired judge, Justice Samapti Chatterjee, to inquire into atrocities against women.
