Madurai: Madurai airport’s runway expansion is expected to begin in 2028 after the ring road is realigned, airport advisory committee chairman and Congress MP Manickam Tagore said. The runway expansion would be taken up at a revised cost of about Rs 1,850 crore. The airport currently has a 2,285-metre runway, or about 7,500 feet, while the long-pending expansion proposes extending it to around 12,500 feet.

Runway work will begin only after the new road is ready,” Tagore said. “About 97% of the land acquisition has been completed,” Tagore said, adding that steps were underway to acquire the remaining parcels. AAI officials have said construction can begin only after the remaining land is transferred without encumbrances.

“The ring road work will be completed within two years. Tagore was speaking after an AAI consultative meeting attended by Madurai MP Su Venkatesan, minister C T R Nirmal Kumar, airport director P Muthu Kumar and officials. Madras high court in Feb dismissed petitions challenging acquisition at Chinna Udaippu and directed residents to vacate, subject to rehabilitation measures.
