Chennai: A 27-year-old guest worker from Bihar was stabbed to death when he tried to save his friend during a clash with another group from Assam near Somangalam in Kancheepuram district on Wednesday night. Police have launched a search for five men in connection with the murder.
Police identified the deceased as Gulshan Kumar, 27, who was staying near Kattarambakkam with his friend Nitish Kumar , 25. Police said a group of workers from Assam, including Tobo, 24, Bapkon, Vikas, and Akash, also lived and worked in the locality.
Gulshan stepped in to protect his friend and was stabbed in the neck instead, police said. Both were employed at a factory in the Sriperumbudur area. An argument broke out between the two groups and soon escalated into a clash. Tobo pulled out a knife and attempted to slash Nitish on the neck. He collapsed at the spot with severe injuries.
The two groups got into quarrels earlier. On Wednesday night, Tobo and his friends were sitting at Kattarambakkam junction when Nitish and Gulshan arrived.
Somangalam police registered a murder case and sent the body to Sriperumbudur Government Hospital for postmortem. Special teams have been formed to trace Tobo and four others who are absconding.
