Chennai: AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami has left out senior leaders S P Velumani and C Ve Shanmugam from the party’s list of 40 star campaigners submitted to ECI for the Oct 6 bypolls. Velumani was in charge of Tirupur district, where Dharapuram assembly segment is located, during the April 23 polls, and Shanmugam is an influential AIADMK leader in northern TN. This comes after Palaniswami expressed displeasure that Velumani and Shanmugam were functioning as a separate entity within and outside the assembly. He has kept them away from key party activities. Former ministers K P Anbazhagan, P Thangamani and K C Veeramani, along with several other functionaries associated with their camp, were left out of the list too. The composition of the star campaigners’ list suggests that Palaniswami has not sought to broaden the role of the dissident camp in the bypoll campaign. Download the TOI App.
