Chennai: PMK president Anbumani Ramadoss announced that the party will not support any political party in the upcoming byelections for the Madurantakam (SC) and Dharapuram (SC) assembly constituencies in Tamil Nadu .

Subsequently, extensive consultations were held with state executives and district functionaries overseeing the two constituencies to decide on the party’s stance, he said. “Following detailed discussions, the party unanimously decided to remain neutral and refrain from extending support to any political party for the bypolls,” he said. In a statement on Friday, Anbumani said that PMK had earlier announced that it would not field candidates in the bypolls.

The announcement has come as a setback to AIADMK , which had allied with PMK in the recently concluded assembly elections. The support of PMK was particularly crucial in Madurantakam, a region where it wields considerable influence. With PMK abstaining from the polls, votes of the party cadres may be split.
