Hyderabad: Telangana and Andhra Pradesh may have become significant contributors to India’s mutual fund industry, with combined assets under management (AUM) of ₹2.95 lakh crore as of July 2026, supported by rising systematic investment plan participation, but they continue to lag behind other states due to their penchant for pouring savings into real estate and gold , according to the Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI).

He pointed out that, on average, in the country, 44% of total household savings go towards real estate, 22% towards gold and the remaining 34% in financial assets. Telangana’s AUM rose 19% year-on-year to ₹2,12,856 crore, placing it eighth among states and Union Territories and giving it about 2.5% of national mutual fund assets. The state had 82.24 lakh folios, or 2.9% of India’s total. Hyderabad remained the dominant centre, accounting for ₹1,84,261 crore, or 87% of Telangana’s assets, after an 18% annual rise. The city ranked eighth among India’s top 30 mutual fund centres. Andhra Pradesh’s AUM grew 23% to ₹82,409 crore, ranking 15th nationally and representing nearly 1% of India’s mutual fund assets. Its folios crossed 79.44 lakh. Visakhapatnam led within the state with ₹16,614 crore, about one-fifth of total assets, followed by Vijayawada at ₹8,337 crore. SIP assets stood at ₹47,975 crore in Telangana and ₹26,820 crore in Andhra Pradesh. Women accounted for 24.42% of Telangana’s unique investors and 23.60% in Andhra Pradesh, below the 26.74% national average overall.

“If you look at the habits of people from AP and Telangana, they invest more in real estate and gold and therefore even in the mutual fund industry, if you look at their investments it is much lower when compared to the country’s average,” Venkat N Chalasani, CEO, AMFI, which is a non-profit industry body of asset management companies, told newspersons here on Friday.
