The greenfield airport at Kalyani was announced in the 2026 state budget to address the capacity constraints and reduce congestion at Kolkata airport, and to improve air connectivity in the region. While the total land required is around 2,000 acres, the length of the runway with clearance at both ends should be about 5 km. The width of the land required for the runway should be about 500 m. At present, the govt has around 240 acres, including a govt-owned brick field across 172 acres.

“Given the absence of any scope for expansion of the existing airport in Kolkata, the proposed airport is being planned on the lines of similar projects in Delhi (Noida International Airport at Jewar) and Mumbai (Navi Mumbai International Airport in Navi Mumbai),” chief secretary Manoj Pant wrote to the land & land reforms department principal secretary in June. Sources said two parallel runways are being planned in the northeast-southwest direction, with the passenger and cargo terminals and ATC tower to their east. In addition, taxiways, parking bays, passenger and cargo terminals, and several other facilities will have to be developed. The rest has to be acquired. The maximum land requirement will be in Kalyani and Birpara, followed by Sarati, Murutipur and Umarpur. Download the TOI App.
Kolkata: The Bengal govt has imposed a restriction on transaction of properties in nine mouzas in Nadia to be able to buy land for the 2,000-acre proposed greenfield airport at Kalyani . Acting on the direction of the state chief secretary, the Directorate of Registration and Stamp Revenue has issued a notification, directing registration officers not to register any kind of document involving properties in the mouzas of Birpara, Char Jadubati, Ganga Mohanpur, Char Madhusuanpur, Sarati, Murutipur, Umapur, Iswaripur and Kalyani.
