Mumbai: The Bombay high court has set up a new three-judge bench which will commence hearing afresh petitions challenging the constitutional validity of the Maharashtra State Reservation for Socially and Educationally Backward Classes Act, 2024 which provides for 10% to the Maratha community in education and public service in the state. The bench will start hearing the matter on Oct 9.
Earlier, CJ Devendra Upadhyay, Justice Girish Kulkarni and Justice Firdosh Pooniwalla were hearing the matter and on CJ’s transfer to Delhi HC, the matter was assigned to a new full bench led by Justice Ravindra Ghuge from May 2025 till this August. The new full bench was necessitated following the elevation of acting Chief Justice R V Ghuge as Chief Justice of Calcutta HC. The new bench will be headed by Justice Makarand Karnik and will comprise Justice Nizamoodin Jamadar and Justice Sandeep Marne. This is the third constitution of a bench to hear the batch of petitions challenging the special state law and some supporting it. Download the TOI App.
