Officials said the leopard, possibly drawn from the Agashiv mountain in search of food and water, entered the settlement after 15-20 dogs chased it. The leopard was shifted to Varade TTC, and it would be released into its natural habitat after treatment and medical observation, as directed by senior officials. Honorary wildlife warden Rohan Bhate said police had to move residents away as the crowd hampered the rescue. Avadhoot Gosavi, a resident, spotted the leopard surrounded by the dogs near the foothills while on a morning walk. He chased the dogs away to prevent them from injuring the animal. However, the dogs continued pursuing the leopard, which then crossed the Karad-Dhebewadi road, entered an open plot between two buildings and took shelter at an empty handcart. A crowd gathered after the leopard was spotted. Forest officials, assisted by police, secured the area. A team comprising World Wild Heart Rescue and forest department personnel captured the animal safely in a cage. Forest department officials inspected the carcass to determine whether it had died naturally or been killed by poachers. They found all its body parts intact. The Karad, Dhebewadi, Patan and Koynanagar regions of Satara district, along with parts of Shirala tehsil in Sangli district, have been witnessing increased movement of leopard.
