Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: A man from Kolhapur was booked by Bhada police of Latur district for allegedly making a false emergency call to 112 and claiming that his sister was being assaulted at her in-laws’ house in Shivli village on the border of Latur district.
The incident occurred on Sept 15 when the accused — identified as Vikas Sadashiv Kamble — dialled the emergency helpline and reported that his sister was in distress, according to the police. “Misuse of the 112 emergency helpline by giving false information diverts police personnel and resources from genuine emergencies. The information given to the emergency helpline was therefore found to be false,” he said.
Inspector Vishal Shahane from Bhada police station said a team reached the village expecting to find a woman in need of immediate assistance. Latur superintendent of police Amol Tambe said emergency response systems were meant to ensure prompt assistance to people facing genuine threats or emergencies. Such calls can also delay assistance to people who actually need immediate help,” he said.
“On reaching Shivli, our personnel learnt that the caller’s sister had not been staying with her in-laws for more than a year.
