Nashik: Food and drug administration’s (FDA) Nashik division seized food products worth over Rs5.8crore in 36 separate raids conducted across the region over the last 10 days. The latest operation took place on Thursday, when FDA officials raided a food processing unit at Sayyad Pimpri in Nashik, seizing items worth over Rs48.8 lakh. Officials reported seizing more than 12,000 kg of birista (fried onions) valued at Rs48.03 lakh, along with 328 kg of refined sunflower oil worth Rs78,000.
Under the provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, the stock was confiscated due to suspicions that the food items were substandard, unsafe, and stored under unhygienic conditions harmful to human health. The special enforcement drive was led by FDA commissioner Tukaram Mundhe and joint commissioner (food) of FDA Nashik Mangesh Mane to curb the sale of adulterated sweets, dairy products, edible oils, and spices.
Prior to this operation, Nashik FDA had seized adulterated and unsafe food stock worth Rs5.4 crore across 35 other raids over the past 10 days. Key seizures among the 36 raids included unsalted pasteurised cooking butter worth Rs3.95 crore from a cold storage facility in Ahilyanagar. These raids were carried out under the guidance of senior officers to ensure that safe and hygienic food reaches consumers during the upcoming festivals.
