Palghar: The district administration has decided to install CCTV cameras at identified accident-prone black spots along the Mumbai-Ahmedabad National Highway-48 and mark these locations on Google Maps to alert motorists in advance. A total of 25 black spots have been identified on NH-48. Between 2023 and 2025, these locations recorded 117 accidents in which 108 people were killed. Between 2022 and 2026, highways in the district witnessed 746 accidents, leaving 449 people dead and 301 injured. Work is underway to close 53 such openings by installing metal-beam crash barriers and New Jersey-type barriers. For pedestrian safety, NHAI has completed 10 foot overbridges (FOBs) along the highway. Work on six more FOBs at Talasari, Neelgiri Hotel, Amboli, Khanivade, Bapane and Sasunavghar is scheduled to begin in the first week of Oct 2026.
The black spots will also be mapped on Google Maps so that motorists can be alerted while approaching accident-prone stretches. The decision was taken at a meeting chaired by Palghar collector Indurani Jakhar to review measures to curb the rising number of road accidents on highways in the district. A dedicated control room will be set up to monitor the identified black spots, while CCTV cameras will be installed at all such locations. Unauthorised openings in highway medians have been identified as one of the major causes of accidents. NHAI will also develop a real-time monitoring system to keep track of median openings and prevent unauthorised access. The administration has directed the concerned agencies to strengthen monitoring and take preventive measures at accident-prone locations to reduce fatalities on the highway. Download the TOI App.
