Nashik: In a crackdown on illegal sand mining, the Jalgaon police, in a joint operation with the revenue department, seized 16 tractors and eight trucks involved in illicit sand transportation across the district.

Law enforcement agencies have intensified their crackdown over the past few months to curb the persistent sand mafia in the region, according to Jalgaon superintendent of police (SP) Srikant Dhivare. The multi-agency operation began early Friday at 4am and continued till late afternoon. By Saturday afternoon, the Pachora police station in Jalgaon was in the process of registering cases against the individuals caught transporting sand illegally. Officials noted that even stricter legal measures are being planned to dismantle the network permanently. The menace of illegal sand mining extends beyond Jalgaon within the Nashik division. Police confiscated vehicles and equipment used for illegal sand extraction valued at over Rs30 lakh.

On Friday, the Ahilyanagar police executed simultaneous raids in Rahata and Kopargaon, arresting three individuals, while two others managed to flee.
