The balcony can look surprisingly different once the weather starts cooling: a few empty pots can turn into rows of crisp radishes, leafy spinach, bright green peas and carrots hiding beneath the soil. And unlike many summer vegetables, several winter crops actually enjoy the cooler growing conditions. If you have been waiting for the right time to start a small kitchen garden, now is the window to pay attention to. ICAR guidance lists radish, carrot and spinach among suitable winter crops, while garden-pea is also widely grown as a cool-season vegetable. A recent IIHR study even successfully grew radish and spinach in plastic grow bags, showing that a balcony does not need a large patch of land to produce vegetables.

ICAR recommendations include radish among winter vegetables, while IIHR research has demonstrated radish growing in 15-litre bags. Here are five vegetables worth putting in pots before winter settles in. Radish is well suited to cooler-season cultivation and can be grown directly from seed. Spinach is one of the easiest ways to make a balcony garden look productive quickly. Instead of waiting for a large plant, you get a crop of soft green leaves that can be picked as needed. Garden pea is recognised as a winter vegetable in Indian cultivation, and ICAR has documented successful pea cultivation during September-October sowing, with pods beginning to develop within the following months under suitable conditions. And before buying a dozen pots, start small. A few containers of radish, spinach, carrots, peas and turnips can turn an otherwise unused balcony corner into a miniature winter kitchen garden.
