The accident occurred around 3pm while the tanker was heading towards Mumbai. A large quantity of milk began spilling from the overturned tanker, leaving milk spread across the highway. On seeing the milk flowing out of the tanker, local villagers and motorists gathered at the spot and rushed to collect it in bottles and containers. Police reached the spot soon after being alerted and began relief operations. Traffic on the Mumbai-bound carriageway was disrupted for some time following the accident.
