Bulandshahr : Eight members of a family, including a UP Police constable, were charged with abetment of suicide on Monday, a day after a 40-year-old doctor from Hapur was found dead in a sugarcane field, with his family alleging that he had been harassed, threatened and pressured to pay Rs 15 lakh following the death of a local resident who had taken medicines from him.
Police said they recovered his mobile phone and a suicide note naming the accused, including constable Roopchandra, in which Kunwarpal allegedly said he had been “repeatedly humiliated and harassed over the patient’s death and was under pressure to pay the money”. An empty bottle and packets suspected to have contained a poisonous substance were also found, police said. Dr Kunwarpal Singh ran a private clinic at Mubarikpur Salamatpur in Babugarh. Locals found his body near a field the next morning.
He left home on his motorcycle on Saturday and did not return.
He attempted suicide at home on Aug 31 by consuming a poisonous substance but survived,” Anshul said. An FIR under BNS section 108 (abetment of suicide) has been registered against eight men, including the constable.”
Kunwarpal had been under immense stress following a complaint to the Hapur chief medical officer over the patient’s death, alleging “medical wrongdoing”, according to his son Anshul. He later died of a heart attack,” Anshul said, claiming that the family cremated the body without a postmortem. Kunwarpal’s family also alleged that following the complaint, the accused demanded money from the doctor to “settle the matter”. Hapur Sadar circle officer Deepak Chaturvedi said, “A suicide note has been recovered and the allegations mentioned in it are being verified.
“A man named Jaiveer had visited my father’s clinic a few months ago after a few episodes of fainting. He was prescribed basic medication and his family was advised to take him to a hospital for a proper diagnosis, but they did not. “My father was assaulted after refusing to pay. He kept telling them that he had done nothing wrong, but he was repeatedly threatened and humiliated. He had become extremely distressed and felt that his reputation, which he had built by serving people in the area, was being destroyed. The circumstances leading to Kunwarpal’s death are also being examined. We will await the postmortem report to ascertain the exact cause of death.
