2023, requiring employees to work at least 10 days per month: The wider industry impact

Infosys has updated its work-from-home (WFH) policy, introducing new conditions for employees seeking additional WFH days. This change aligns with similar adjustments made by competitors, including Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and Wipro, who have also tightened their WFH guidelines recently. The move reflects a broader trend in the software industry as companies adapt to evolving workplace dynamics.

The Bengaluru-based company has capped extra WFH days, or exceptions to working from office (WFO), at 5 days per quarter, according to a report by The Economic Times. Employees at job level 5 and below must work from the office for at least 10 days a month. The report noted that sources who were briefed on the subject have clarified that the company offers up to 30 additional days of remote work to employees in critical medical situations.

“If a request is not approved as per policy, there is very little that we, as managers, can do,” the emails noted. Meanwhile, Infosys said it was not planning any changes to its hybrid policy in its post-earnings press conference earlier this month. “We will remain flexible in the way we are today and the way that our employees are interacting with the company and with our clients,” CEO Salil Parekh said at the time.

The report claims that Infosys’ system will not allow anything beyond this except in cases of critical medical conditions of the employee or dependents, with employees required to back requests with supporting documents, including a doctor’s verification. The new cap applies to requests seeking more WFH days beyond the standard policy. As per the report, emails sent by an Infosys manager to employees explaining the policy stated that he noticed a substantial increase in requests for approval of additional WFH days. The mail asked team members to get pre-approval for any WFH request in the system, not on the email. The manager noted that employees must plan and raise requests well in advance to avoid last-minute issues. However, Infosys has yet to respond to an email seeking an official comment on the new policy.

TCS Implements New Attendance Policy Tied to Variable Pay

In 2025, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), India’s top software exporter, introduced a five-day work-from-office policy. This initiative links employees’ variable pay to their office attendance. However, the policy accommodates employees with health issues by permitting two days of work-from-home each month.

Infosys, the second-largest IT firm in the country, has more than 300,000 employees. 2023, requiring employees to work at least 10 days per month from the office, the company began enforcing it only on March 10, 2025 While Infosys introduced a return-to-office policy on November 20. Apart from Infosys, rival Wipro has also tightened its work-from-office policy, which took effect on January 1. Wipro’s latest policy mandates employees to spend at least 6 hours in the office for 3 days a week, a shift from the earlier flexible hours, and reduces the number of remote workdays to 12 from 15 earlier. The revised policy comes at a time when the $283 billion IT sector is facing slower revenue growth, as artificial intelligence (AI) reduces reliance on people-based delivery models.

Employees are required to stay in the office for a minimum of three hours.

Tech Companies Tighten Remote Work Policies in Response to Project Demands

Amid rapidly changing project timelines, tech companies are revising their remote work policies to foster better collaboration. Industry experts highlight that the shift towards more agile project management necessitates a return to in-office work.

Aditya Narayan Mishra, managing director at staffing services firm CIEL HR, noted that with projects becoming shorter and requiring quick adjustments in manpower, many companies might demand full-time in-office attendance by 2026, at least on designated office days. This trend reflects a broader move within the tech industry to adapt to new operational realities as remote work continues to evolve.
