New Delhi: More schools are on the way for northeast and east Delhi , with govt planning pucca buildings on vacant plots in Nand Nagri, Mandoli, New Usmanpur, Johripur and Geeta Colony. The additional capacity could be crucial for northeast Delhi, where overcrowding has been a recurring concern.
In 2024, DoE revealed that there were only 48 schools in northeast Delhi district for 1,32,607 students, which meant only one school catering to 2,763 students.
These projects will ease the burden on other schools in northeast Delhi, said the official.
“The five projects together are estimated to cost around Rs 165 crore, covering civil, electrical, mechanical and allied works. A few years ago, Directorate of Education (DoE) data submitted to Delhi High Court showed student-classroom ratios exceeding 100 in several schools, including an average of 190 students per classroom at a govt school in Johripur in northeast Delhi. Once an agency is appointed, the consultancy process will be completed within 45 days, which will include soil investigation, structural design with model and drawings, and approvals, an official said.

Preparatory work, ranging from soil investigation and structural planning to designing classrooms and electrical, water supply and fire-safety systems, is expected to start soon,” an official said. It will also prepare the specifications and equipment lists that will be used for execution,” the official said. All five schools are being planned as four-floor buildings, along with stilts. Schools in areas such as Khajuri Khas and Sabhapur have also struggled with severe space constraints. Public Works Department has invited consultancy for the projects. The consultant’s job will go far beyond just drawing up the buildings. From checking the soil and planning the structure to designing classrooms’ electrical, water, fire-safety and other systems, the agency will prepare the projects down to the stage where construction can begin. The structural design will have to follow the latest applicable BIS and seismic codes and incorporate earthquake-resistant provisions. “The consultant will first undertake a geotechnical investigation and prepare the detailed design-basis report before working out the structural design, site development plan and detailed construction drawings. The agency will have to handle permissions linked to trees on the sites, including applications to the forest department for tree cutting or replantation, tree mapping, photographs and tree-wise details. The consultant will design the schools’ electrical, solar, CCTV, public address and IT systems, along with fire alarms, sprinklers, firefighting and escape systems. The work will also cover water supply, plumbing, sanitation, sewerage, sewage treatment, drainage, lifts, DG sets, parking and integrated water management. Download the TOI App.
