Kolkata: A comprehensive crime-trend analysis conducted by Lalbazar has identified specific hotspots and evolving patterns of theft across Kolkata, prompting the police brass to order targeted interventions ahead of the festival season.

The Jadavpur area, extending from Golf Green to Purba Jadavpur, has emerged as a hotspot for thefts — especially petty ones. The port area, along with a few spots around Bansdroni-Garia have emerged as big spots for house break-ins. North Kolkata and eastern suburban Kolkata report temple thefts. “In Jadavpur and adjoining areas, there are a lot of PG accommodations where students study late into the night, often leaving laptops exposed before going to sleep. Criminals arrive by the last train, conduct a preliminary reconnaissance of the area, scale rain pipes, and steal the electronics,” an officer explained. Cops added that houses in Jadavpur, Garia, and Bansdroni also witness frequent break-ins. Lalbazar has instructed all police stations and the Detective Department (DD) to invoke strict organised crime provisions against repeat offenders. In one such instance, cops recently charged Jakam Sheikh — a habitual burglar specialising in cutting through window grilles — under organised crime sections after he allegedly stole expensive cameras from a commercial photo studio. Simultaneously, police stations across the city are facing a growing challenge from petty criminals targeting Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) compactors and electric vehicles to steal batteries. In north and central Kolkata, thieves have frequently targeted temples or operated under the guise of scrap dealers and paper collectors to gain entry into residential premises. To curb these systematic property offenses before Durga Puja , Lalbazar has directed local police stations and specialized DD units to analyse every single theft by cross-referencing CCTV footage, call detail records, timing, and geographic clusters. Officials believe identifying and arresting key pattern-based offenders will effectively dismantle entire crime chains, a strategy also being adapted to curb motorcycle thefts. Senior officers also ordered an immediate crackdown on unverified domestic help and caregivers following a series of thefts allegedly carried out with insider help. Police stations have been directed to conduct neighbourhood outreach and organise awareness meetings at housing complexes, and residents are being advised to upload details of newly hired domestic staff on the Kolkata Police ‘Bandhu App’.
