Because she was seen with a man, it is high time we start questioning the misogyny – both the subtle kind and the very obvious kind – and those statements that somehow suggest a woman is doing something morally wrong simply. Because this is not really about who overtook whom.
Until we wrote our first Quick Take, we thought the conversation was about road safety – about how you are responsible for your own safety when you are on the road. After watching the video of the accused on one of the channels, I waited. I genuinely needed a moment to wrap my head around the words that came out of his mouth. “Maine jab aapko peeche chhod diya toh aap aage kaise aaye? “Maine unse bola humein tease mat karo. Uss ladki ke saath uska ek friend bhi tha. Uski shakal dikhao na. Kalyan’s lawyer also alleged “Yeh log usey pinch kar rahe thay. Women are on the road. They can drive faster than you. They can drive better than you. And occasionally, they will overtake you. And that will hurt your ego. But how many women can you hit with your borrowed car? There’s nothing wrong with having a male friend. There’s nothing wrong with riding a bike. And though you may not get it, she was wearing protective gear and, thankfully, had cameras to show exactly what happened when her overtaking you on the road apparently didn’t sit well with your fragile male ego. It is about what happens when a bruised ego convinces someone that another person’s presence, choices or confidence somehow give them the right to intimidate, question or endanger them. A woman overtaking you is not an insult. Her having a male friend is not an accusation. And neither is an invitation to punish her for hurting your ego.
And that is the larger problem – the discomfort some men still have when women enter spaces they have traditionally considered their own.
