Tirupur: Door-to-door collection of postal ballots began in the Dharapuram assembly constituency on Tuesday ahead of the Oct 6 byelection.
The Election Commission of India has extended the postal ballot facility to voters aged above 85 years and persons with disabilities of 40% and above, enabling them to vote from their homes. As many as 1,236 voters have opted for the facility. Thirty special teams have been formed to collect the ballots in the constituency. Each team comprises an officer designated to attest the voter declaration form, another officer serving as the polling officer, a micro-observer from the central govt or a central public sector undertaking or a public sector bank to monitor the postal ballot process, a police officer and a videographer to record the postal ballot voting process. The process was flagged off from the Dharapuram revenue divisional office by RDO A Felix Raja. Based on the list of eligible voters with election officers, teams are visiting homes to obtain postal ballots. Download the TOI App.
Authorities said the collection exercise would be carried out over two days, on Tuesday and Wednesday.
