The metallurgical sciences building also needs major renovation as water percolation is happening and an important lab remains inaccessible much of the time because of the water. ” Electrical engineering associate professor Arindam Sil said, “The electrical infrastructure at the Machines lab on the ground floor of the 100-year-old electrical engineering building is failing, with exposed live wiring and peeling conduits hanging directly from the walls. It requires immediate renovation as it serves not just the electrical engineering department, but 14 to 15 other engineering departments accommodating a large number of students, or else operations in the lab will inevitably have to be shut down to prevent fatal electrical accidents. ” Pharmacy professor Sanmay Karmakar said, “The pharmacy building is in a potentially dangerous state for over four years.
Kolkata: Jadavpur University (JU) vice-chancellor (VC) Chiranjib Bhattacharjee has written to the higher education dept seeking a nod to conduct an EC meeting at the earliest to form several statutory bodies like planning and development (P&D) to submit proposals to the PwD for repair and renovation of many academic and administrative buildings that are in a damaged condition, to decide on convocation details like the chief guest and implementation of NEP at the PG level. Different students’ organisations as well as hostel boarders have written to the VC demanding renovation of academic buildings, laboratories and hostels that are in critical condition and pose a risk. Teachers have also submitted several letters highlighting the dangerous condition of several buildings that have become accident-prone and the need to implement NEP at the PG level. Recently, we had to shift two labs from the chemical engineering dept to Technology Bhavan as the building is in a bad shape. We need to form a P&D committee to submit proposals to PwD for repair. We also have a fund crisis. Forty students have been accommodated in the JPJU hostel with six to seven students in each room. Boarders have flagged safety concerns at the G C Sen hostel. The production building next to it is structurally fine, but the electrical lines are lying open, which is in an accident-prone condition. During heavy rains, these walls become damp and electrified, creating a severe, life-threatening environment.
