Bengaluru: Karnataka has launched an action plan to reduce population-level salt intake by 30% by 2030, with the govt proposing measures targeting salt consumption at home, eateries and through processed and packaged foods.

Under the strategy, Karnataka will address three major sources of dietary salt — discretionary salt used at home, food consumed outside home, and processed and packaged foods. Measures include promoting low-salt cooking and low-sodium salt substitutes, engaging food service providers to reduce use, and encouraging voluntary salt reduction among food manufacturers. The state will also explore dietary counselling through the health system and support research on potassium-enriched low-sodium salt.
