A 17-year-old girl from Odisha reportedly died by suicide on Sunday night after jumping from the top floor of a hostel building located in Dhannipur village, near Lohta police station in Varanasi. This incident has raised concerns about mental health and the pressures faced by students living away from home. Local authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding her death.
She was a Class 12 student at an inter college and had been staying at Sneh Deep Hostel in Dhannipur village.
Lohta police station in charge Abhijit Singh said the deceased was a resident of Bisra Santoshpur in Rourkela. After learning about the incident, her father reached Varanasi but declined to lodge a case with police in connection with her death. Police sent the body for postmortem after recovering a diary from her room in which she had written, “I am fed up with my life. During a search of her room, police found a diary carrying a note saying that she was fed up with life and did not want to live. In view of the seriousness of the incident, police questioned four women associated with the hostel as part of the preliminary inquiry. After being informed, her father travelled from Rourkela to Varanasi and reached the police station late Monday. He submitted an application stating that he did not want any legal action over his daughter’s death. Police completed the inquest proceedings and sent the body for autopsy.
Officials said any further action would be based on the postmortem report and any fresh evidence that emerges during the course of the investigation.
