Kolkata: Chief minister Suvendu Adhikari on Wednesday flagged off 226 modern firefighting vehicles and equipment ahead of Durga Puja . The fleet comprises 198 midsize water tenders of 2.5-KL capacity, 25 water tenders of 6-KL capacity, and three 36-metre articulating water towers. Adhikari also proposed awarding firefighters Jeevan Raksha medals for rescuing 30 devotees in Tarapith fire and 80 people in Free School Street fire. The state govt is also strengthening fire service infrastructure with 23 stations under construction and 10 new projects announced in the state budget.

“These will enhance fire and emergency services,” Adhikari said. Calling deaths due to locked exits in Tarapith and New Market lodges “pathetic and painful,” he promised recognition for rescuers. He directed fire department DG and MOS to assess state fire stations and distribute inaugurated vehicles quickly.
