Kolkata: The state govt is set to shut down around 250 more govt-recognised unaided madrasas after Dec, minority affairs and madrasa education (MA & ME) minister Khudiram Tudu said.
However, as per our estimate another 250 odd madrasas will be shut down after Dec,” Tudu said. “We will ensure that not a single Khariji madrasa operates in the state. The academic session in the madrasas will come to an end with the final examination in Dec. We do not want any disruption in studies till then for the handful of students currently enrolled. So, we are not closing them down at this juncture.
The department estimates that around 600 madrasas could face closure after Dec.
“The 100 showcaused madrasas are expected to reply before the Durga Puja,” Tudu said, adding that the govt would shut them if their responses were found unsatisfactory. “We want the students studying in the madrasas to pursue modern, mainstream education and shine in life just like students from other schools,” said a Nabanna official. The process of setting up the department is expected to be completed within the next three months, health minister Sharadwat Mukhopadhyay said Wednesday.
The state Cabinet on Wednesday approved the creation of a separate AYUSH department.
