A Stephen Curry trade rumor has circulated as the Warriors guard nears extension eligibility on August 29, but ClutchPoints insider Brett Siegel says there is no truth to it. Siegel reports Golden State plans to offer Curry a two-year, $136.7 million deal and let him choose the structure. Curry has stayed with the Warriors since he arrived in 2009, and speculation about his future picked up after Golden State missed on top targets including Giannis Antetokounmpo, Jaylen Brown and LeBron James this summer. Curry becomes extension eligible on August 29, and Golden State can put a two-year, $136.7 million deal in front of him.
Separately, former Warriors guard D’Angelo Russell said on his podcast that he would rather see Curry finish his career with the Boston Celtics, citing a lack of support around him in Golden State. The Stephen Curry trade rumor making the rounds this offseason has no basis, according to ClutchPoints insider Brett Siegel. He added that the belief inside the organization is unequivoca, “The biggest part of everything, because there’s just rumors going out of nowhere, Tomer, about, ‘Oh, Steph Curry’s going to be traded, he’s going to request a trade,’ None of that is true,” Siegel said, citing what he described as extremely good authority from within the Warriors that Curry intends to stay for the rest of his career. Siegel said the Warriors intend to hand Curry an open-ended offer rather than dictate terms, letting him pick between a shorter deal, the full two years, the max number or even a discount. D’Angelo Russell, who spent two stints with Golden State, said on his own Backyard Podcast that he would like to see Curry finish his career elsewhere, specifically in Boston. “I would love to see Steph Curry go to Boston,” Russell said.
The two takes frame very different pictures of where Curry’s future stands. Siegel shut that talk down on the Clutch Scoops podcast, saying there is zero truth to rumors that Curry could request a trade from Golden State. Not everyone close to the situation agrees Curry should stay put.
Curry’s Potential Adaptability Sparks Interest
Russell expressed excitement about the possibility of Stephen Curry teaming up with Jayson Tatum and Paul George in Boston, highlighting it as a matchup worth watching. He pointed out that Curry has spent his entire NBA career within a single system, with the exception of his time representing Team USA. Russell emphasized that observing Curry adapt to a new environment would be intriguing in its own right.
