Meanwhile, Manipal is planning a 600-bed unit at New Town. Adani Group has recently announced a 2,000-bed hospital, that too in New Town. Apollo started its first greenfield hospital in early 2000. Now, Apollo has 750 beds in the city while Manipal has 1,513 beds across four hospitals. The group was also planning a 600-bed hospital in New Town. Manipal entered Kolkata following the acquisition of Columbia Asia in 2017-18. This was further consolidated through formal rebranding of three AMRI Hospitals units in 2024. The units were taken over by the group in Sept 2023.
It later announced rebranding of Medica Superspecialty Hospital as a unit.
Sources close to the healthcare industry said Chennai-based Apollo is planning two more hospitals in the city and is scouting for land. Kolkata: The city could soon see an intense three-horse race between the largest healthcare groups in the country – Apollo, Manipal and Adani. Manipal has already expanded its footprint in the city through acquisitions though it entered the city after Apollo. Sources added that Apollo is planning to challenge its national rival through an expansion here. It has already initiated a discussion with a real estate group for a possible land acquisition. As far as Apollo is concerned, a source in the healthcare industry added that it would possibly look for two superspeciality hospitals in the city, which could triple its bed count. Apollo could not be contacted for comment. Three leading southern healthcare groups — Manipal, Narayana and Apollo — now account for nearly half of the total private hospital beds in Kolkata and Howrah.
One of the locations it may choose could be New Town where the Adani group has also announced a hospital recently and Gautam Adani is going to do the stone-laying with CM Suvendu Adhikari on Thursday.
Charnock Hospital has a capacity of 300 beds at its main facility in Teghoria, which includes over 100 ICU beds. Across its broader hospital network, the group launched Charnock Lohia Hospital in central Kolkata earlier this year, enhancing its total capacity to around 610 beds.
Institute of Neurosciences Kolkata (INK) launched Snayu-Tirtha Medical College & Health City last year on a massive 100-acre campus in Rajarhat. This expansion will feature a dedicated neurosciences university, a research academy and a 600-bed speciality hospital to significantly bolster patient capacity. Disha Hospitals is set to launch a 250-bed hospital, which will be scaled up to 650 beds.
At least four other hospitals are on an expansion spree. Woodlands Hospital, too, is set to launch a new unit at New Town.
