Sony’s new 600mm G Master lens weighs just 995g, only a gram more than the 400mm
Sony has launched two super telephoto prime lenses in India for its Alpha full-frame E-mount cameras, the FE 400mm F4.5 GM OSS and the FE 600mm F6.3 GM OSS. The 400mm lens is priced at Rs 3,10,990 and the 600mm at Rs 4,28,990. Sony claims both are the world’s lightest in their categories. The 400mm lens weighs about 994g, and the 600mm weighs about 995g. That’s a single gram of difference for 200mm of extra reach. Both measure 108mm across, while the 600mm is 21mm longer at 263mm. Sony has also moved the centre of gravity closer to the camera body to make handheld tracking and panning easier.
An 11-blade circular aperture handles the background blur. Autofocus runs on two XD Linear Motors, and Sony says the lenses can keep up with the Alpha 9 III shooting at 120fps.
“At under 1 kg, these lenses bring 400mm and 600mm focal lengths into a form factor that photographers can realistically carry, handle and shoot with in the field,” said Mukesh Srivastava, Head of Imaging & Professional Solutions, Sony India. The optical design uses three Super ED elements and one ED element to control chromatic aberration, along with Sony’s Nano AR Coating II to cut flare in backlit scenes. Optical stabilisation is built in, and the lenses work with in-body Active Mode stabilisation and breathing compensation for video. With Sony’s optional teleconverters, the 400mm can stretch to 800mm and the 600mm to 1200mm. Both are dust and moisture resistant, with a fluorine coating on the front element.
Both lenses go on sale from September 24 at Sony Centers, Alpha Flagship stores, authorised dealers, major electronics stores, Amazon and Flipkart.
