Belagavi : Belagavi witnessed a grand Ganesha idol immersion procession, marking the culmination of the 11-day Ganeshotsav celebrations. Of the 1,156 Ganesha idols installed by Ganesh mandals across Belagavi city and suburban areas under the police commissionerate limits, the immersion procession of around 380 idols from the city drew huge crowds. Last year’s procession lasted 38 hours, prompting the administration and police to make efforts to reduce the duration this year.
As per the muhurta, idols were immersed on the 12th day. MLAs Asif Sait and Abhay Patil, Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Roshan, Police Commissioner Prakash Nikam, DCP Narayan Baramani and office-bearers of Ganeshotsav committees participated. Thousands of devotees and visitors from neighbouring districts and states witnessed the city’s iconic immersion spectacle. Police made elaborate arrangements to regulate traffic and ensure the smooth movement of the procession. Twenty swimming teams were deployed as a safety measure.
Chandrashekar Shivacharya Swamiji of Hukkeri Math flagged off the procession at Hutatma Chowk on Friday evening.
