The accident occurred when a car travelling ahead abruptly took a U-turn, leaving the vehicles behind unable to stop in time, according to reports. The car had three occupants, including a woman, who were travelling from Ottappalam to Kochi airport when the accident occurred. Attempts were made to douse the flames using a fire extinguisher brought from a nearby shop.
