Unchecked on-street parking, often exacerbated by double parking by taking up entire driving lanes, has turned busy thoroughfares such as Melamadai Road, KK Nagar Main Road and Anna Nagar’s 80-Feet and 100-Feet roads into major bottlenecks. “Buses, share auto rickshaws and slow-moving pushcarts share a single lane with regular commuters as parked vehicles block half of the road on either side,” said M Arockiya, a resident of Surveyor Colony. “There are also plans to build multi-level parking facilities in an effort to reduce traffic,” a senior corporation official said. In the case of Alagar Kovil Main Road, used daily by public and school buses, vehicles, mainly auto rickshaws, stop in the middle of the road, forcing motorists to slow down and make sudden halts. A lack of parking in front of the shops on both sides of the road compounds the issue, as large vehicles crawl around looking for a parking space or stop covering half of the road. ‘No Parking’ signs, though present, have no effect. The road is near GRH and important govt buildings, worsening congestion throughout the day. “Normally, traffic is quite bad as no care is taken to obey rules. Wrong-side driving is rampant, especially when buses halt and traffic piles up,” he added. To address the crisis, traffic police continue to collect fines from violators, though officials acknowledge that enforcement alone cannot solve the problem. Police, revenue and corporation officials are working together with commercial establishments and shopowners to mandate proper parking amenities and direct shoppers to designated zones.
