Madras high court on Monday disposed of a batch of petitions filed seeking justice for the victims of police firing during the anti-Sterlite protest in Thoothukudi in 2018. A division bench of Justice C V Karthikeyan and Justice R Sakthivel observed it hoped that the state government would come forward to provide adequate compensation to the victims.
Madurai: Madras high court on Monday disposed of a batch of petitions filed seeking justice for the victims of police firing during the anti-Sterlite protest in Thoothukudi in 2018. The petitioners had sought a direction to initiate action against the erring officials responsible for the death of 13 people who died in the incident. A division bench of Justice C V Karthikeyan and Justice R Sakthivel observed it hoped that the state government would come forward to provide adequate compensation to the victims. The judges also dismissed a contempt petition filed by one of the petitioners alleging defects in CBI’s investigation which led to dropping of the disciplinary action against erring police officers. The court dismissed the contempt petition on the ground that the trial court where a protest petition is filed against the chargesheet is the competent court to decide on the matter.
