Kanpur: A 30-year-old woman died under suspicious circumstances at her in-laws’ house in Juhi Safed Colony under Kidwai Nagar police station area on Sunday night. Her family has accused her husband and in-laws of murdering her over dowry demands, alleging that she was strangled and her body was later hanged to make the death appear to be a suicide.
Her in-laws informed her parental family by phone that she had died by suicide. After reaching the house, her family alleged that she had been strangled. Akanksha Mishra’s family also alleged that she had injury marks on her neck, wrists, hands and legs. Police pacified the family after assuring them of action and sent the body for postmortem.
For about eight months, her husband had allegedly pressured her to bring Rs 20 lakh and a Bullet from her parental home to help arrange a new house. About two weeks ago, she was allegedly harassed by her husband, his parents and his sister, while Rs 4 lakh in cash was taken from her family. Because of social stigma, the family claimed that Akanksha did not disclose the full extent of the alleged harassment.
Kidwai Nagar station in-charge Vijay Singh said the family had submitted a written complaint and further action would be taken on the basis of the postmortem report. Her family alleged that Akanksha was harassed for dowry after the marriage.
