Retired IPS officer Hasmukh Patel is chairperson of the GPSC. The General Administration Department (GAD) issued separate appointment orders for seven members — K L Bachani, K C Sampat, K S Vasava, Mayur Mehta, H J Prajapati, Dipakkumar Rathod and Shishir Trivedi. Of the new appointees, Bachani, Prajapati, Sampat and Mehta are serving IAS officers, while Vasava is a retired bureaucrat. Rathod is a retired superintending engineer and Trivedi a non-govt member. The appointments come against the backdrop of persistent delays in filling vacancies in various govt departments through recruitment conducted by the GPSC. Delays in recruitment have repeatedly come under scrutiny, with Gujarat High Court pulling up state govt on several occasions over the pace of the recruitment process.
Gandhinagar : Gujarat govt on Monday appointed seven members to Gujarat Public Service Commission (GPSC), in a move aimed at strengthening the commission and expediting recruitments through competitive examinations.

Sources said strengthening GPSC with the appointment of seven members is expected to speed up the process of conducting examinations and finalising recruitment. Sources added that the move also comes with Gujarat assembly election little over a year away and amid heightened focus on govt recruitment and employment-related issues. Download the TOI App.
The issue has also been regularly raised by opposition parties, while govt job aspirants have staged protests in recent years demanding faster recruitment and appointment to vacant posts.
