Accused Rosemary
Thodupuzha: A 46-year-old woman was sentenced to life imprisonment on Monday for strangling her newborn baby to death in Marayoor, Idukki , in 2014. Thodupuzha district first additional sessions court also imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on Rosemary alias Kuttiyakka of Pulikkaravayal, Nachivayal. The incident took place on May 13, 2014.

Judge Ash K Bal ordered an additional year of imprisonment if she failed to pay the fine. The newborn was found wrapped in a blanket on the roof of a cattle shed at Rosemary’s house. Though residents rushed the baby to hospital, doctors could not save the child. An investigation led by then Munnar police inspector A R Shanikhan resulted in Rosemary being identified as the accused. The chargesheet was subsequently filed by then Munnar inspector Sam Jose. The prosecution case was that Rosemary had secretly delivered the baby and strangled it to death before wrapping the body in a blanket and leaving it on the cattle shed roof.
